The classic MK4 and its background.

The Jaguar Mark IV, was styled by the young Lyons himself, its striking looks were the catalyst for attracting sales from all over the world, this also suited the British Governments post war drive to increase exports of leading industrial products.

Mechanically the Mark IV range is the same as the pre-war Jaguar saloon range and were produced in saloon and Drop Head Coupe form. The 2.5 and 3.5 engines were now produced by Jaguar, Lyons having bought the tooling from Standard, who continued to supply the 1.5 engine, making it the last Jaguar to be built with an outsider engine. The Mk IV was never a recognised model name at the time of manufacture, the designation 'Mark IV' first appeared officially from a Jaguar source in 1964 in the USA and is commonly used to identify these models.

This car is a stunning Jaguar and in its day was way ahead of its competitor models, like other post war Jaguar models the design was conceived after the name was changed from SS to Jaguar. There were many subtle changes made to the car design due to the name change ( the name change was due to the gradual realisation of the war crimes associated with the term SS) for instance the radiator badge now reads "Jaguar" with the engine size, the SS logo having been eliminated. The badge in the center of the rear bumper is a "J", replacing the "SS". The tyres are 18" rim diameter with wire spoke wheels, and optional Ace discs covered the spokes to give the appearance of disc wheels.

Furthermore the wheel knock-off hubs also say 'Jaguar' rather than 'SS', in many ways this was a shame as the name SS was synonymous with the creation of stylish sporting cars. At around the time of this cars manufacture a brochure released as part of the sales drive still showed 'SS' on the spinners. The Jaguar MK 4 brochure was withdrawn very quickly and never reissued so only a few copies are now known to exist.
